“You won’t be needing them in here,” Monaal said and opened a locker. He drew out two pairs of blue coveralls like the ones he was wearing.

Chris wrinkled his forehead. “Aren’t you taking us back to the moon’s surface?”

“No, I’m sorry.”

“But, sir!” Chris’s voice was full of disappointment. “Now that you know who I am and about my granddad and all, aren’t you going to trust me? I promised I wouldn’t say a word to anyone about this place, and I meant it!”

“Me too,” Steve added. “I won’t tell anyone either.”

Monaal smiled at them. “I can’t be sure of that. I need to study you further. You may be able to leave later, but on one condition.”

“What’s that?” Chris asked.

“Prove to me that you can be trusted.”

Chris spread his hands in front of him. “Isn’t our word good enough?”

Monaal shook his head. “Words are easily forgotten. Actions are not.”

“What can we do?” Chris asked.

Monaal held out the coveralls. “Put these on, and I’ll tell you.”

Quickly the boys began removing their life-support suits.

Monaal sat on a bench as he talked. “There are beings from many worlds in our Intergalactic Federation. Over eons of time, we have learned to work together, to treat one another as equals, and to trust one another. Those using this way station are here to rest, to repair their spacecraft, or to help with the station’s operation. If you show me that you can work in harmony with these beings, that you regard them as your equals, that you trust them and can be trusted in return, then you may leave.”

Chris zipped up the blue coveralls. “That won’t be hard. We’ve learned to do that in our satellite city.”

“Sure,” Steve said. “People from all over Earth live there, and we get along fine.”
